Tasmanian Myrtle
- Heartwood is a pink or light reddish brown, while the narrow sapwood is paler by comparison. There are cases of dark streaks in the wood which have been coined the name “tiger myrtle”.
- Grain is generally straight, but there are cases with interlocked, wavy, or curly grain patterns.
- Texture is very fine and uniform with a high natural luster.
- Considered perishable in regard to decay resistance and is also susceptible to insect attack.
- Works wonderfully with hand and machine tools, however, areas with interlocked grain patterns are more difficult to run through a machine.
- Heartwood may present some defects if air-dried.
- Glues, stains, and finishes well.
- Closely related to beech wood and is sometimes even called silver or myrtle beech.
