Sweetgum

  • Sapwood is wide and is a whitish to light pink or tan color while the heartwood is gray to reddish brown.
  • Grain is interlocked with a very fine uniform texture resulting in good natural luster.
  • Moderately durable regarding decay resistance, however, it is susceptible to insect attacks.
  • Generally easy to work with both hand and machine tools, however, with the interlocked grain planer tear out is common.
  • Material is known to warp and distort during drying process.
  • Turns, glues, stains, and finishes well.

***FUN FACT: Sweetgum got its name from its sticky gum-like sap that was also considered as the first chewing gum. ***
