Aromatic Red Cedar

  • Heartwood can be reddish to violet-brown while the sapwood is a pale yellow which can appear throughout the heartwood as streaks or stripes.
  • Grain is generally straight even with knots present and has a fine even texture.
  • Excellent in decay and insect resistance; frequently used for fence posts that have direct contact with the ground.
  • Easy to work, if no knots or irregularities are found in the sample.
  • Due to the wood’s high silica content, it may dull cutters.
  • Glues and finishes well, however, it is recommended to leave the wood unfinished so that it may retain its aromatic properties.
  • Smells just like a #2 pencil.
  • Commonly used in closets and chests to repel moths and most insects.
