Boxwood

  • Heartwood and sapwood are not distinct from each other, resulting in the overall color to be a light cream or yellow color that darkens slightly overtime from prolonged exposure to light.
  • Grain tends to be straight to slightly irregular.
  • Texture is fine and even with a natural luster.
  • Heartwood is durable; however, it can become stained with dark streaks resulting from a fungal attack.
  • Occasionally susceptible to insect attack.
  • Can be difficult to work in flat dimensions, however, it turns wonderfully.
  • Pieces with irregular grain patterns can cause planer tear out and other machining difficulties.
  • Can have a slight blunting effect on cutters.

***FUN FACT: Oils from the wood can be used to treat a variety of illnesses such as epilepsy, toothache, fever, or to treat flu symptoms. ***
