Brazilian Cherry

  • Heartwood can vary from a light orangish brown to a darker reddish brown. Can have contrasting dark gray streaks. The overall color will also darken over time with exposure to light. Sapwood is clearly separated from heartwood in a light grayish yellow.
  • Typically, interlocked grain with a medium to coarse texture resulting in a good natural luster.
  • Very durable and resilient to rot.
  • Resistant to termites and most other insect attacks. (However, it can be susceptible to attack from marine borers such as gribbles or shipworms in favorable water).
  • Can be difficult to work with due to its density, hardness, and its moderate blunting effect on cutters.
  • Due to interlocking grain, planar tear out may occur.
  • Glues, stains, turns, and finishes well.

***FUN FACT: Brazilian cherry isn’t actually a type of cherry, it’s a legume that’s a member of the pea family due to its sweet seed pods. ***
