Kingwood

  • Heartwood can be anywhere between a dark purple to a reddish brown with darker black streaks, whereas the sapwood starkly contrasts with its pale yellow color.
  • Grain is usually straight or on some occasions interlocked with a fine uniform texture and a high natural luster.
  • Very durable in regard to decay resistance and resistant to termites.
  • Can be difficult to work due to high density.
  • Can have a blunting effect on cutters.
  • Planer tear out can occur if interlocked grain is present.
  • Gluing can be challenging due to its high natural oil content and density.
  • While being worked, the material smells like rosewood.

***FUN FACT: This type of material was once revered as royalty wood; only Kings could possess such fine material. ***
