Poplar

  • Heartwood tends to be light brown whereas the sapwood is a pale yellow to nearly white and is unfortunately not clearly depicted from the heartwood.
  • Grain is generally straight to slightly irregular or interlocked with a uniform medium texture. Has a low natural luster.
  • Non-durable and susceptible to insect attacks.
  • Easy to work with hand and machine tools, however, it is recommended to use sharp cutters to avoid fuzzy surfaces.
  • The material does have a habit of warping or distorting during the drying process.
  • Glues and finishes well.

***FUN FACT: The tanning agents and the oils that are extracted from the buds of the black poplar tree are used to treat inflammation and are still used today in creams targeted for inflammation and fever. ***
