Western Red Cedar
- Heartwood ranges from reddish to pinkish brown. Can often have streaks of darker reds and browns. The sapwood is narrow and is pale yellow white which sharply contrasts with the darker heartwood.
- Grain is straight with a coarse texture and moderate natural luster.
- Durable decay resistance, however, mixed resistance to insect attacks.
- Fairly easy to work with both hand and machine tools. Wood can dent and scratch very easily due to its softness.
- Due to its differences in density, care must be taken while sanding to prevent unevenness.
- Glues and finishes well.
- Iron based fasteners can stain and discolor the wood in the presence of moisture.
- Has a fresh, citrusy-cedar scent while being worked.
***FUN FACT: Crushed red cedar leaves smell just like pineapple! ***
