Yellow Cedar

  • Heartwood is light yellow and is not distinct from its whiteish pale yellow sapwood. The overall color tends to darken with age upon exposure to light, however, if let outside to the elements the color will be weathered down to a uniform gray.
  • Usually has a straight grain, however, wavy grains can occur.
  • Has a uniform medium to fine texture.
  • Very durable decay resistance and resistant to most insect attacks.
  • Easy to work with both hand and machine tools, however, pieces with a wavy grain may cause planer tear out.
  • Stains, glues, finishes, and paints well.
  • Smells like raw potatoes.

***FUN FACT: Yellow Cedar was used by the Western Coast Native American peoples for totem poles and war canoes. ***
